Do you know that next to oil, coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world? Do you also know that our country is blessed with all four varieties—Robusta, Excelsa, Arabica, and Liberica (Barako)—of commercially-viable coffee? Are you aware that, at present, Sultan Kudarat is the country’s biggest coffee producer? Finally, do you realize that, in the 1800’s, Batangas played a minor role in producing coffee for world consumption? Batanguenos became so rich that their money, so some thought of decoration their slippers with diamonds! Sadly, the Batangas coffee industry failed in 1889 due to coffee rust and insect infestation.
